Different coloured Split Plastic Rings are very useful for identification purposes if you have birds that look  similar.
They are also very useful if you have missed your "Ringing age" and can no longer get closed rings to fit over the foot.
Also birds that don't like to be disturbed in the nest ~ parents may abandon or attack the young if you handle them.
Note:  All Wild-type, Captive-bred species and CITES BIRDS must be CLOSE RUNG

The other Avian DNA Service is "Polly-test"   £7:50 per bird  (you have to pay for the testing kits - ring/email for prices and to order). 
- when I last got in touch [2009] it was 50p per needle and test tube with a min of ten per order i.e.£5 )
- You prick the top of one of the birds' toes by the nail and put a spot of blood onto a piece of litmus paper, which is then put in a tiny plastic tube, to post back for DNA Testing.
- it is nearly 1/2 the price of Avian Biotech but taking blood may not be quite a convenient or easy to do on big, adult Aviary birds and plucking a chest feather might feel better!  The choice is yours.
They will email you the results but you pay extra for a certificate to be posted out to you.

Their preferred method is a blood sample. The MDS collection kits consist of a test tube, strip of paper and a needle. A simple needle prick above the toe and below the skin is required. Use the strip of paper swab to absorb the blood and place this into the sterile tube and send to  the above postal address.  The kits are sold in packs of 10 and together with tests, can be paid for by Debit or Credit card. . .  Email them.
